OMERS EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT

Jason Employee Spotlight

If legislative changes or current events (such as a global pandemic) affect pension administration, our Pension Policy, Legal & Strategic Initiatives (PPLSI) team works to understand those changes and make them work for OMERS, our employers and for you – our members.

Meet Jason, a Manager on the PPLSI team.

As an employee who joined OMERS in 2020, Jason’s first year with the company has been a little different than expected. After working in pension actuarial consulting for more than 15 years helping clients with pension-related matters, Jason wanted to make the move to provide the same advice internally for an organization. Since joining OMERS, he’s been busy with everything from assessing the impact of COVID-19 to the recent Plan changes.

“Being able to sit down and come up with an execution strategy to make recent changes work for our members and employers is really exciting. Members are always top of mind for our team.”

Despite working virtually this year, the continued collaborative effort with teams across Pension Services makes working at OMERS rewarding. “I think everyone brings a different perspective to the table. It’s good to hear all of that insight before we make a decision,” says Jason.

While there has been a spotlight on legislation and regulations in 2020, the Strategic Initiatives side of the team focuses on asking questions such as: “What can we do differently? How can we bring different ideas forward to make OMERS a more innovative and relevant pension plan?”

When he’s not focused on the OMERS Plan text or the Pension Benefits Act, you can find Jason out for a run or training for his next race. But his love of running isn’t just about completing marathons. To Jason, “The thing about running that is different from other sports is it’s mostly you against yourself. You’re beating your best time. You’re beating your longest run. You’re beating your better effort. The excitement, for me, comes from knowing I couldn’t do it at some point, but now I can.”
